University of Varmia and Masuria
In the region there are 9 high schools, where are studying ca. 65 000 students. The biggest high school is University of Varmia and Masuria (UWM). The University was founded on 1 September 1999, after merging three educational institutions: the fifty-year-old Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the thirty-year-old Pedagogy College and the 450-year-old Warmian Theological Institute. The university employs about 3300 people of which 2000 are teachers including 230 professors and 280 habilitated doctors.
It has sixteen faculties like medicine, humanities, pedagogy, theology, fine arts, law, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, biology, economics, mathematics and provide education for over 31,500 students. School of Medicine is the youngest and unquestionably among the best equipped medical schools in Poland. School of Medicinbe is a fast-growing, friendly and one of the best Medical Schools in Poland, the confirmation of which can be the second place in the International Anatomy Competition “Golden Scapula” that its students won in 2009.
The University of Varmia and Mazuria in Olsztyn is unique as it is situated in a picturesque part of city - Kortowo campus, the pride of the University. Campus occupies an area of 230 hectares and is surrounded by forest and 4 lakes, the biggest one - Kortowskie Lake. Learning, leisure and recreation - all these needs are satisfied at the campus. Students living here are provided with everything they need for life: teaching buildings, 12 dormitories, sports fields and stadiums, recreation areas, swimming pool, 12dormitories, shops, services, medicine center, cafeterias, banks, post office, student clubs, parks…
Kortowo harbor offers a water equipment rental service, including sail boats, rowing boats, kayaks, water bikes and surfboats. The university also has a modern swimming pool complex, consisting of a main pool, a small basin, Jacuzzi and saunas. Swimming competition, in which students of the University are very successful, are held regularly at the pool.
At Kortowo there is also a stable where students can take horse riding lessons offered by qualified instructors or simply take a ride. For those keen on tennis there are several open courts located in different areas of Kortowo. In the center of Kortowo there is also an athletic stadium, where a lot of regional and national sport events take place. For those who like jogging, there is a great place - the forest near Kortowo. In Olsztyn you can find about 44 km of cycling paths, however far more interesting are the forest paths in Kortowo, which will enable you to enjoy the beautiful landscape and clean air far from urban traffic and noise. The most common winter sports in Kortowo include cross-country skiing and sledging down Kortowo hill. Sledging during wintertime has almost become a tradition at Kortowo campus.
In the campus there are 188 scientific societies and student organizations, university radio station (Radio UWM FM), television (TV Kortowo) and magazines, the Kortowo Folklore Song and Dance Troupe, the Choir of the UWM, famous volleyball team AZS UWM and many others. All this constitutes a great social and cultural environment to interact and to acquire experience by meeting people from various fields of knowledge and from different countries.
The pride of the university is a ultramodern library, very well equipped and providing access to electronic books. It also provides access to examination tests if you would be interested to get USA license.
The Student Parliament of the Republic of Poland awarded UWM the title of a Student-friendly University twice already, in 2004 and 2008. Seventy universities were competing for this honourable title.
